Apple employees learn about two exciting new products reportedly coming in 2022, 2023
Despite earlier reports from reliable TFI International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman stating that Apple's AR glasses could be unveiled early next year, fresh news published by The Information (via The Verge) suggests that we are in for a longer wait. In fact, the new report claims that Apple will be producing two different devices, a mixed reality headset that will be released in 2022 followed a year later by the smaller AR-based Apple Glasses. The Information says that its knowledge of the timeline comes from sources who attended an internal presentation made at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino last month. The report also notes that Apple employees were told during the presentation that Apple will start talking with developers about software for the 2022 mixed reality headset starting in 2021.

The report states that the mixed reality headset carries a codename of N301 and looks like a slimmer version of the Oculus Quest VR headset released earlier this year, Apple's device will feature both AR and VR capabilities using cameras to provide a real-world view for the former. The headset will be able to combine the two realities to put virtual objects smack dab in the middle of a real-world background. And users will get to view all this through a high-definition display.

So what about the heralded Apple Glasses? We've heard so much about this device for a few years now with one analyst famously predicting in 2017 that they will be bigger than the iPhone. This pronouncement made by Gene Munster might not be as far-fetched as it sounds. The report notes that even Apple management expects the glasses to replace the iPhone although it will take about a decade to do so. Apple Glasses are smaller than the mixed reality headset and are designed to be worn for longer periods of time. Someone who has seen the current prototype says it resembles a pair of "high-priced sunglasses" that come with thick frames to house the batteries and chips. Again, if this report is legit, we won't see this device until 2023.


Apple CEO Tim Cook has been known to have a fascination with AR and back in 2016 he said that while both augmented reality and virtual reality are interesting, "augmented reality is the larger of the two, probably by far." The executive said back in March that Apple is working on new products that will "blow you away," and we would assume that Apple's AR headset and glasses are both included in the exciting new products that Cook was talking about.

As recently as September, code discovered in iOS 13 pointed to a codename of T288 for the Apple Glasses, confirming a leak we previously passed along a couple of years ago. The prototype is allegedly known as "Garta." The hidden information also referred to an app known as "STARTester" that will show on the display of an iPhone, what the Apple Glasses user is seeing through his lenses. Apple has reportedly developed a new reality operating system (rOS) for the AR glasses which are expected to be powered by a 5nm Apple-designed chipset.

One major question is whether Apple Glasses will require a nearby iPhone to process some of the features of the device. Kuo, who has an enviable track record when it comes to making forecasts about unannounced Apple products, belongs to the camp that says that Apple Glasses will require an iPhone connection. However, the prototype, as we mentioned earlier, is said to have thick frames to house some of the chips and batteries so there is a possibility that it will be a standalone product. If today's report is correct, we might not know the answer to this question for more than three years.

Going to need the iPhone paired. Otherwise the price will be ridiculous by itself.

They should use USB-C on their new iPhones, especially when USB 3.2 is faster than any wifi or 5G right now. We are talking 20 gigabits. But since iPhones don't support fast communication speeds, thats probably why Apple has now said 2022. Users might see the crappy slow lightning port go the way of the dodo bird. Even with wifi 6 can support up to 10 gbits a second. That doesn't take into account any errors, or any radio interference, which can reduce that wifi speed significantly. Also where are all the iDiots that said VR is dead? VR is the only thing that can give you an immersive experience, that is something that AR can't do. Anyone that has used both AR and VR, then you know what I have said is 100% the truth. Want proof. Think about this. Most of Apple's revenue from it's app store comes from games. Now VR is going to be the dominate offering for gaming. Way more than AR could ever dream of offering. Think about the game call of duty. AR would suck for a game like that, especially since VR is designed to make you feel like your actually in the scene. An AR version of call of duty would still let you see your TV, chairs, tables, and couch in the background. That would be useless. The same holds true for many games, like driving games "Need for Speed", and AR would completely suck for driving games, what about flying games, or space battle games, walking and building something on Mars. This is where VR shines through, and is designed for that full immersive experience. Something that AR alone just cannot offer or do. Not to mention the millions of VR videos that are already out there. I guess Apple finally realized that if they only came out with a AR headset or glasses, then they may as well shoot their own foot, and lose all the revenue that VR would bring in.

Mobile VR was DOA and nothing have changed since, except Samsung and Google giving up and admitting it finally. There was never real mass interest towards mobile VR. I don't know which dreamland you are living with these your comments. just a fun fact, there's currently around 300 VR games at play store and most of them came 2017 and most haven't updated since 2017. It kind a tells it all. Developers doesn't care neither users.

Midan you said in other posts that VR is dead. Now you are saying that mobile VR is dead. Your fun fact of 300 games is a lie. Daydream can use all the Cardboard apps, as well as many of the Steam VR apps. Samsung never gave up, and never came out and said that their Gear VR is dead. Especially when their Gear VR is Oculus compatible, Daydream compatible, and Valves Steam VR compatible. Even Daydream is Steam VR compatible. It's sites like Theverge, PhoneArena, or people like you that say Samsung, and everyone else gave up on VR, or mobile VR. Which is a lie. You love to spread lies. Even theverge said that they are not sure on what Samsung is doing with their VR. Look at the end of the day Apple, and I hope you realize as well, that VR is not only here to stay, but is actually needed, period. VR is the part that gives you immersion, period. That is something that AR just cannot do. AR is great, and I already have a number of AR headsets and glasses. But I also have a number of different VR headsets, including the Oculus Quest. Standalone mobile VR is thriving, and the Oculus Go at it's price ($200) proved that it can grow if it's convenient, and easy to use. The Oculus Quest is just that much better, and it offers two 6 degrees of freedom controllers, that were only found on expensive desktop systems like the Rift. But now you can get room scale 6 degrees of freedom VR headset like the Oculus Quest for $400 USD. Why do you think Apple has back tracked, and now mentions that they are working on an AR/VR headset similar to the Oculus Quest? The Oculus Quest is mobile VR you dimwit, and there is nothing stopping the Quest hardware from doing AR as well. Plus VR is still growing, period. As much as some iDiots would like VR to die, like you have said many times in the past, and now is here to stay as you can clearly see. Mobile VR/AR is still evolving, and the problem with many of the Phone VR platforms, is they required the user to place their phone in and out of a separate headset, especially if you had a case on your smartphone. Plus it would eat battery. So is Phone VR dead. No I would say it's still evolving. Especially when some new AR/VR headsets are going to be offering 6 dof via a USB-C cable. So users can just plug into a USB-C smartphone, and away they go, they are up, and running with 6 dof, with hand and finger tracking as well. Can't get much easier than that. Plus since most people carry a smart these days, then USB-C makes total sense. Especially since it will provide the fastest interference free communication to the headset or glasses. I am fully emersed in this area, and like I said I have many different VR and AR headsets and glasses. So I come from an area where I haved used all of the VR platforms, and now many of the AR platforms. This is PhoneArena, they don't even test any VR or AR headsets or glasses on this site.

AR is lot more useful for big mass than VR.

Lol, you are stuck on trying to make VR a thing of the past, and to pump up AR. AR is going to grow as well as VR. That is just a fact. VR offers full immersion. That is something that AR just doesn't do. The real problem with AR today is the tech and cost isn't ready for the masses, especially if you want a great FOV (field of view), because the best AR glasses, or headsets today offer a 50° FOV. The best VR headsets today offer a 130° FOV. But if you merge VR with AR (XR or MR), then you can get 130° FOV today, but now it's a headset, and not some light glasses. The Oculus Quest could do AR today with a software update, or if a developer decides to make an app that shows the camera view. The Quest has a 110° FOV, and has 4 cameras in front. So if you show the real world using those cameras in front, you now have AR on the Quest for all of $400. Now to say AR is more useful just proves to me how ignorant you are when it comes to this technology in general. They are both needed, can you not see that Midan. Even Apple knows that. To say one is better than the other also proves that you don't read. Ask yourself this Midan, why is Apple coming out with an AR headset 2022, first? Why not wait till 2023 for their AR glasses? Or better yet ask yourself what is AR and then ask yourself what is VR? If you can answer those questions honestly, then you would know that both are needed, and both will provide that greatest mass adoption, period. VR for the best and most immersive gaming. AR for the best and most interactive real world interactions. If your glasses or headset provides both, and is the lightest, and offered the greatest FOV, and the highest resolutions, then you will have a winner.
